Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which is better: Steam Cleaning or Dry Cleaning?
First, some clarification...
- Steam Cleaning doesn't use steam. Technically, it is called Hot Water Extraction.
- Dry Cleaning isn't actually dry - it uses a liquid solvent similar to what is used by Dry Cleaners to clean clothing.
Dry Cleaning does a poor job of removing soil and it leaves chemicals in the carpet which can cause yellowing and health issues.
Loren Carpet Cleaners recommends Steam Cleaning and uses a professional hot water extraction system.
In this method, a hot cleaning solution is sprayed under pressure onto the carpet and is immediately extracted with a vacuum. The dirty solution is collected in a tank and is usually poured into the sanitary waste system. This process has the ability to flush out large amounts of soil and contaminants from carpet. It is the most preferred method by all of the major fiber producers such as DuPont, Monsanto and Allied Signal, as well as the carpet manufacturers like Shaw, Mohawk, World and Queen. Because this method removes more contaminants than the other carpet cleaning method, steam cleaning is favored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is the preferred method of the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).
Shaw Industries, the largest carpet manufacturer in the world, recommends Steam Cleaning and their warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction.
From the Shaw website:
“Research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as "steam cleaning," although no steam is actually generated. The process consists of applying a cleaning agent into the carpet pile and using water in the extractor to recover the used solution and soil. This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside or by a portable system brought into the home.”
WebMD also recommends Steam Cleaning: “...steam cleaning upholstered furniture and carpets -- and doing it often -- helps control allergens.”

2. Can you remove Pet Urine Stains and Odors from my carpet?
When a cat or dog urinates on a carpet, the urine smell and sometimes even the stain cannot be removed by simply steam cleaning the carpet. This is because once the urine evaporates under the backing of the carpet, sticky crystallized uric acid salts remain behind. These uric salts provide a food source for bad bacteria to feed on. As the bacteria feed on the uric acid salts they release ammonia gases. This is what we smell and associate with cat or dog urine. You may notice this smell more on a rainy or humid day.
Loren Carpet Cleaners uses a special environmentally-friendly enzyme disinfectant that essentially liquefies the uric acid salts allowing them to be extracted from your carpet. The live bacteria are applied after the cleaning to kill any remaining "bad" bacteria. These products are non toxic, safe for children and pets and are guaranteed to remove most urine stains and smells and will leave your home smelling wonderful! Some urine stains, yellow in color may not come out of your carpet; but, we will do everything possible to achieve successful results.
3. Does Scotchgard™ really work and when do you use it?
Yes it works! Loren Carpet Cleaners uses only 3M brand Scotchgard™ and not a cheap knock-off.
- Repels spills, resists soils and blocks stains.
- Strong protection pushes spills away from fibers.
- Limits reappearing spots.
- Doesn't change the look or appearance of your upholstery, carpet or rug.
- Keeps your upholstery, carpets and rugs looking good longer.
- Ideal for carpet, rugs, stairways, hallway and stairway runners, and upholstery.
We recommend applying Scotchgard™ to carpets in any normal to moderate traffic areas or areas that are susceptible to stains. Similarly it will protect upholstery and cushions. It is best to have the application after each steam cleaning and at least once a year.
4. Why should I use a Family-owned business?
You might be tempted to try one of those "cheap rate" companies. We all want the cheapest price on the products and services that we purchase. This is of course true but the phrase "you get what you pay for" generally comes into play. The cheapest is almost certainly never the best and this holds true with carpet cleaners.
First off is the fact that the cheapest carpet cleaners are most often the ones who will try to scam you. They will lure you in with a cheap price and then hit you with the extras once they are inside your house. These "cheap cleaners" can often end up costing you more than a moderately priced one.
Secondly, most of the technicians from these companies are just employees that want to get in and out as soon as possible. Are they going to make the effort to do what it takes to get the job done right? It is very important to take the time to vacuum a carpet thoroughly so it will dry properly.
Loren Carpet Cleaners is a family-owned business that has been in operation for over 25 years. We will give you a free estimate with no hidden fees. We take pride in our work; we rely on repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising. In a word - We Care!
5. Will my carpet be left wet?
Your carpet will be damp to the touch and should dry fully within 12 -18 hours or less.
It is important to use enough hot water to deeply clean a carpet, but not so much as to soak it. And it is equally important to take the time to vacuum the excess water out of the carpet. In humid conditions, we often suggest the use of fans or cross ventilation.
6. Are my carpets a health hazard?
Your carpets may have more germs than any other surface in your home. Laboratory studies indicate that carpets can have thousands of times the amount of bacteria per square inch than toilet seats or bathroom floors.
When you and others enter your home, your shoes track in all the germs from wherever you have been. And your pets only magnify the situation. These germs and bacteria also migrate to sofas and cushions.
Loren Carpet Cleaners recommends deep steam cleaning every six months to rid your carpets and upholstery of bacteria, fungus, pollen, mold, microorganisms, dust mites, and residue from cigarette smoke.
